"APES" CONTINUE TO DOMINATE BOX OFFICE

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- You can't shake the apes from the top of the box office tree. "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" stays number one for a second straight weekend -- bringing in another $36 million. Its total now is nearing 140 mil. The horror thriller sequel "The Purge: Anarchy" opens in second, followed by the opening of the animated sequel "Planes: Fire and Rescue." But "Sex Tape" isn't generating much heat. The R-rated comedy, starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, takes in only $15 million -- good for fourth place. Meanwhile, the summer "chill" continues at the movies. The total take at the box office this past weekend is down by nearly 25 percent compared to a year ago. Overall, the summer movie season is off by about 20 percent from last year.

It's the mid-summer chill for Hollywood. The AP's Jamie Friar looks at the weekend box office figures.

VETERAN JAMES GARNER DIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- James Garner has died. The actor who is best known for his role in the TV series "The Rockford Files" passed away this past Saturday at age 86. He was found dead in his Los Angeles home; police say they were called out to the house and confirmed his identity from family members. Garner specialized in drama and action films. But he had more of a low-key style -- honing a less-threatening take on the American hero, a man more likely to talk his way out of trouble than to shoot his way out of it. Garner received the Screen Actors Guild's lifetime achievement award in 2005. Accepting the honor, he quipped, "I'm not at all sure how I got here."

ACTRESS SKYE McCOLE BARTUSIAK DIES

HOUSTON (AP) -- She was just 7 when she played Mel Gibson's young daughter in the 2000 film "The Patriot." But she had trouble recapturing the level of success she had in Hollywood with that role. And now, Skye McCole Bartusiak is dead. Her mom says the actress died in the garage apartment at her parent's home in Houston. Helen Bartusiak says her daughter had been healthy and didn't drink or do drugs -- but the family doesn't yet know the cause of death. She was 21.

"MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT" - WOODY ALLEN

NEW YORK (AP) -- Woody Allen keeps making movies because he leads a rather boring life otherwise. Allen says his day consists of hitting the treadmill and weights, having breakfast, writing in his room, and maybe taking a break to practice clarinet or to go for a walk. He says his pleasures consist of playing with his kids, going out to eat and going to the occasional basketball game. He says because he doesn't have "a particularly frenetic life," he can stay focused on filmmaking. His latest movie, "Magic in the Moonlight," opens Friday.

Woody Allen says he's not distracted by the trappings of fame.

ROB BROWN OF "TREME" SETTLES RACE BIAS SUIT AGAINST MACY'S

NEW YORK (AP) -- A member of the cast of "Treme" has settled a racial discrimination suit against a major department store. One of Rob Brown's lawyers says there has been a settlement of a suit that claims his civil rights were violated. Brown claimed he was falsely accused of credit card fraud at Macy's flagship store in New York City after buying a $1,300 watch for his mother. He says he was handcuffed, held for nearly an hour at a store detention cell and was teased about being able to afford the expensive timepiece. It was one of a series of complaints by black shoppers that raised questions about security practices and profiling at Macy's and other major stores in New York.

NEW ACTRESS LANDS AALIYAH ROLE

NEW YORK (AP) -- The new actress who will play Aaliyah in a made-for-TV movie won't have time to get the role down pat. Lifetime announced this past Friday that Alexandra Shipp will get the role -- and that production will start later this month. Zendaya had the role originally -- but she quit the production last month. "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" is due out this fall. Aaliyah died in an August, 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas. She was just 22.

MARK RUFFALO HITS CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- Mark Ruffalo says he felt right at home during his trip over the weekend to the Chicagoland Speedway in Illinois for his second NASCAR race. And not just because fans flocked to him to get autographs and have their picture taken with him. Ruffalo says the racing culture "is really familiar" to him because he grew up in the region. He says NASCAR people are "kind of family." Ruffalo was the grand marshal for Saturday's Nationwide Series stop. But he also came out to support Leilani Munter. The driver's car carried an ad for Ruffalo's "The Solutions Project."
