CSO Presents 'Home for the Holidays'

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera presents its annual holiday concert, Home for the Holidays, on December 21 and 22 at the Tivoli Theatre. The theme “Through a Child’s Eyes” focuses on holiday memories from each generation’s childhood – from “Go Tell it on the Mountain” to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” to the more modern Polar Express. “The music on this year’s Home for the Holidays program should invoke special memories for each member of the family, from grandparents to young children,” stated CSO Marketing Director, Samantha Teter.

Conducted by Music Director Kayoko Dan and produced/directed by Joel D. Scribner, CSO musicians will be joined by the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Chorus, directed by Darrin Hassevoort, the Metropolitan Bells, the Chattanooga Boys Choir, host Greg Glover, plus a cast of costumed mascots, skaters, local schoolchildren, and, of course, Santa. “This is truly a community event, bringing together several arts organizations plus a cast of children from schools such as Falling Water, Nolan, and Chickamauga Elementary Schools, Soddy Daisy Middle School, Belvoir Christian Academy, St. Nicholas School, GPS, Baylor and homeschool,” stated Teter.

Tickets for both performances are on sale now and start at $19, while supplies last. Tickets for children under the age of 18 and college students with a valid student I.D. are $15. Tickets can be purchased online at www.chattanoogasymphony.org or by calling 423.267.8583.

"HOME" WINS BOX OFFICE RACE

NEW YORK (AP) -- "Home" hits a home run at the box office. The DreamWorks movie scored a solid win over the competition -- taking in $54 million in its debut weekend. It was expected to duel with "Get Hard" for the box office lead. But the comedy featuring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell wasn't up to the challenge. It took in $34.6 million -- finishing a distant second in the box office battle. Number three over the weekend is "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" -- which took in $22.1 million.

AP Entertainment Editor Oscar Wells Gabriel reports "Home" is an animated film that is finding success among a wide audience.

UNLEASHING THE "FURIOUS"

NEW YORK (AP) -- Though "Home" won the box office race this past weekend, it likely won't be there for long. Its one-and-done status as box office leader is almost assured -- because of the pending release of "Furious 7." The final installment in the "Fast and Furious" movie series is expected to blow the doors off its challengers. As if its being the finale in the Furious saga weren't enough -- the movie will be the final one featuring Paul Walker, who died in a car accident in November, 2013 -- just before filming on Furious 7 was done.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Green slime and words of encouragement and empowerment from Angelina Jolie. Both flowed freely at this year's Kids' Choice Awards. The actress told the audience Saturday that when she was young, she was told she was "too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in." Jolie told the youngsters when people tell them they're different, they should smile, hold their heads up -- and be proud. She added: "cause a little trouble. It's good for you." Jolie won the favorite villain award for her role as the title character in "Maleficient."

JADA PINKETT SMITH - BLACK GIRLS ROCK!

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Will Smith says hearing all the talk about how his and his wife's marriage was on the rocks nearly got to him. He says at one point, his "heart jumped for a second" -- as he considered what his life would be like without Jada Pinkett Smith. He delivered the tribute as his wife received the Star Power award at the "Black Girls Rock!" event in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night. First lady Michelle Obama attended the event -- and spoke to the audience, which included many young black girls. She said she and her husband, the president, are proud of them -- adding: "No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful." Others honored included actress Cicely Tyson and "Selma" director Ava DuVernay.

TARAJI P. HENSON APOLOGIZES

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Actress Taraji P. Henson has apologized for accusing police officers of racially profiling her son. She posted an Instagram statement Friday -- after police in Glendale, California released video of a traffic stop of Henson's son that shows the officer dealing respectfully with the 20-year-old. She says she overreacted without having all the facts -- and thanked the officer for treating her son kindly. Henson made the claim in an interview in Uptown magazine. In the same interview, she claimed her son was profiled by an officer at the University of Southern California. She says that incident prompted her son to transfer to Howard University in Washington, D.C. Henson's apology didn't mention the USC incident.

DREA de MATTEO HOME LOST IN NYC BLAST

NEW YORK (AP) -- An actress who was in "The Sopranos" is among those who lost their home when an explosion ripped through several New York City buildings last week. Drea de Matteo went on Instagram to post photos of firefighters fighting smoke and flames at the scene. In the post, de Matteo said she had lived in her building for 22 years. The blast caused the collapse of three five-story buildings -- and damaged a fourth building with seven floors.
