'Broadway Off Broad Street' Theme for Evening Shade Concert
Each year millions of music lovers and theatre-goers take in Broadway shows, spending hundreds of dollars on tickets. From Rodgers and Hammerstein to Sondheim to Lerner and Loewe and countless others, Broadway songs tell stories, evoke a response and become melodies that are implanted deep in the minds of listeners.
Instead of investing hundreds of dollars on the Great White Way, music lovers can—for free—enjoy selections from Broadway musicals “off Broad Street” at the fourth Evening Shade Concert in the Park on Friday, May 24.
The Greater Cleveland Community Band will bring Broadway to Johnston Park at no cost to the audience, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and kicking off Memorial Day weekend. These musicians are a collective group of adults who have dusted off their high school and college instruments and reached out to students currently enrolled in area schools to be a part of a community band.
“The band performs throughout the year in the area,” Kyle Elrod, Evening Shade talent organizer, said. “Their repertoire appeals to a broad audience, and this is their third Evening Shade appearance.”
Selections from their “Broadway Off Broad Street” show include highlights from Gypsy, by Jule Styne; Guys and Dolls Overture, by Frank Loesser; highlights from The Music Man, by Meredith Willson; Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, arranged by Michael Sweeney; highlights from South Pacific, by Richard Rodgers; Give My Regards to Broadway, by George M. Cohan; and highlights from Fiddler on the Roof, by Jerry Bock.
“Selections from Broadway musicals are always a crowd favorite,” Elrod said. “This will be a great evening to kick back, relax and begin the holiday weekend.”
Presenting sponsor for the May 24 concert is Garden Plaza at Cleveland.
The series is made possible each year by the Allied Arts Council (AAC) of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce. It is funded in part by local sponsors and under an agreement with the Tennessee Arts Commission.
