Bill Cosby Coming to Tivoli Theatre

Bill Cosby, one of America’s best-loved entertainers, performs at Chattanooga’s Tivoli Theatre on his latest national tour. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 1 at 10:00 am at the Auditorium box office, online at ChattanoogaOnStage.com, and by phone at (423) 642-TIXS (-8497).

Bill Cosby has captivated generations of fans with his comedy routines, iconic albums and best selling books such as Fatherhood. His comedy transcends age, gender and cultural barriers.

Cosby broke television’s racial barrier with I Spy, becoming the first African-American to costar on a television series while winning three consecutive Emmys. He created and produced the Emmy-winning cartoon Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which began airing in the 1970s and was made into a film in 2004. The show, based on Cosby’s childhood in Philadelphia, was designed to educate and entertain.

The former Navy serviceman’s illustrious list of accomplishments includes roles on the children’s educational show Electric Company, and creating and producing the Emmy award wining Little Bill, which is based on his bestselling book series.

Perhaps Cosby’s greatest contribution to American entertainment and culture is The Cosby Show, about a close-knit, upper-class black family. Cosby said his intent was to portray an American family. Time magazine called the show “an encouraging sign of maturity in matters of race.” The Cosby Show dominated the number one spot for years, earning nearly unanimous critical praise. Life magazine described the program as “a gentle, whimsical, warmhearted” show whose “delicious ordinariness of its pleasures and tribulations has given millions a fresh, laughter-splashed perspective on their own domestic lives.”

Bill Cosby’s current best-seller is I Didn’t Ask to Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was. Cosby writes about the Bible, being a grandfather and his first love in his humorous and insightful manner.

Cosby has received the Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (America’s highest civilian honor), the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Marian Anderson Award.

Cosby’s been busy raising a family, too. He married the former Camille Hanks in 1964, while she was still a student at the University of Maryland. They’ve raised four daughters (Erika, Erinn, Ensa and Evin) and one son (Ennis) and now have three grandchildren. The family resides in New England.

Bill Cosby will perform at the Tivoli Theatre for one show only on Sunday, April 14 at 7:00 pm EDT. All seats reserved from $48 to $65.50 plus convenience fees. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 1 at 10:00 am. Tickets will be available at Memorial Auditorium box office, online at ChattanoogaOnStage.com, or call (423) 642-8497. Box office hours are Monday-Friday, 10am to 6:30pm.

"DANCING WITH THE STARS" - KELLIE PICKLER WINS

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kellie Pickler didn't win on "American Idol." But she does on "Dancing With the Stars." The country singer looked shocked as host Tom Bergeron announced that she and pro partner Derek Hough (HUF) win the mirrorball trophy. She screamed "Oh my God!" Pickler got two sets of perfect 10s from the judges Monday night and another last night. But so did runner-up Zendaya. The Disney kid had a lead of a single point going into last night's finale. But it was the viewer votes that put Pickler over the top. Football pro Jacoby Jones finishes in third place. Because there were problems with voting on the ABC website during Monday's East Coast broadcast, those votes didn't count. Only votes cast by phone, text and Facebook figured into the final count.

"IDOL" FINALE A SHADOW OF ITS FORMER RATINGS

NEW YORK (AP) -- Candice Glover is the winner of "American Idol," but Idol is the loser. About 14 million people watched the finale. That's less than half the 29 million people who watched just two years ago. It was good enough for third place in the ratings. Ten years ago, Idol peaked with 38 million viewers for the finale. The "Dancing With the Stars" performance episode was watched by more than 13 million people. The results show scored fewer than 12 million. Only one episode of "The Voice" made it into the top 10. As usual, "NCIS: Los Angeles" was the most-watched show of the week with nearly 19 million viewers.

"THE VOICE"

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Last night's episode of "The Voice" turned into an impromptu telethon for the Red Cross. Blake Shelton is from Oklahoma, hit by killer tornadoes Monday. He and his wife, Miranda Lambert, opened the show with a performance of "Over You," in tribute to the tornado victims. Of course, there were results to announce as well. Kris Thomas from Team Shakira and Josiah Hawley from Team Usher were voted off last night.

CAROL BURNETT AWARD

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's one of the funniest scenes in TV history. Carol Burnett wearing a gown made of green drapes with the curtain rod still in them in a "Gone With the Wind" parody on "The Carol Burnett Show." Burnett will now be honored for a lifetime of making people laugh. The Kennedy Center will give her the Mark Twain Prize for comedy this October. Burnett jokes that she can't believe she's getting this honor in the nation's capital when "it's almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington." You can bet some of her co-stars will be among the comedians honoring Burnett at the gala on October 20. The show will air October 30 on PBS.
