FLAG DAY
Today is flag day--which falls within National Flag Week, a time when Americans reflect on the foundations of the nations freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the countrys ideals since its early days. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date----In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day
GAINING GROUND
Eat Up is Gaining Ground's new series of cookbooks. One will be released each season. It can be picked up at local farmers' markets.
Joining us today is Ruth Kerr with Gaining Ground and Denise Clark the St. Albans Farmers' Market market manager --Gaining Ground supports the production and consumption of locally-grown food in the Chattanooga area.
The Spring edition of the cookbook series, which is available now through the end of the month, includes recipes that highlight what's in harvest April through mid-June in the Chattanooga region as well as eggs, meats, and cheeses that are available all year long.
The cookbook
----creates an emphasis on shopping at farmers' markets and how easy eating locally can be
----brings the local food community together to support Chattanooga area farmers' and boost our local economy
----introduces people to whole foods, local food lifestyle (which works with both healthy food and decadent desserts - like beet brownies!)
----introduces people to locally grown ingredients they may have never known existed (like kohlrabi!)
The St. Alban's Farmers' Market in Hixson is every Saturday from 10-1 (7514 Hixson Pike) - - cooking demo there this Saturday
There are seven local farmers' markets Wednesday-Sunday every week in various locations around the Chattanooga area so it's fairly easy for everyone to buy local!
The Summer edition cookbook will be released early July.

It will be hard to think of the Chattanooga Area Food Bank without Clare Sawyer at its helm. Clare has held the position of President and CEO for many years, during which the Food Bank has made great strides in its mission to alleviate hunger in our area, including moving to a new facility built just for IT... Not a renovated warehouse, but a building on a campus that allows all kinds of innovative programming. Clare's final day heading the Food Bank comes up at the end of June, and we were honored she joined us today.

Day of Action on June 21 and the Kid Fitness Safari on June 23
For Day of Action June 21---- asking people to volunteer for education in the Tennessee Valley. They are actually recruiting for four activities that day - reading to kids at Westside, reading to kids at Northside Neighborhood house, cleaning up the Collegedale library or volunteering for the YMCA's Character Fest at Camp Jordan on June 21. United Way's nationwide have picked June 21 as the collective Day of Action because it is the longest day of the year.
For Kid Fitness Safari June 23----it is being held at Hamilton Place Mall on June 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it is part of United Way's focus on Healthy Children. The event is free to all and we will have giveaways, a prize drawing, healthy snacks and fun activities for kids.
